Company Demonstrates World's First 480 Megabit Per Second MBOA, And Wireless USB, Compatible Chip
Austin, TX, October 11, 2004 - Alereon, a fabless semiconductor company developing innovative Ultra Wideband (UWB) wireless chipsets, today announced it demonstrated the world's first 0.13 micron CMOS 480 Megabit per second capable MBOA (Multi-band OFDM Alliance) and Wireless USB compatible chip. Alereon's demonstration is an important first step in the commercialization of UWB for use in applications demanding the rapid transfer of large files, such as multimedia applications.
Alereon's UWB solution is the first of its kind to demonstrate an ability to wirelessly transfer the contents of a DVD movie in less than 100 seconds - exponentially quicker than the more than 30 minutes required by even the fastest WiFi wireless technologies. The same Alereon solution allows consumers to quickly transfer an entire music play list in just seconds, and also replace USB cables connecting printers and other PC peripherals in a personal area network.
Today's announcement is a milestone for Alereon and opens the door to a world of new product and service opportunities, said Eric Broockman, chief executive officer of Alereon. The performance and extreme power efficiency of UWB makes it ideal to replace USB and 1394 cables for portable products, including digital cameras, MP3 players and personal video players. The power efficiency of UWB is not achievable by any other form of wireless technology.
Compatible with wireless USB, wireless 1394 and Wimedia standards, Alereon has affirmed its leadership in the commercialization of standards-compliant UWB technologies. The demonstration of Alereon's MBOA compliant baseband chip is an exciting step forward in the realization of UWB enabled consumer, PC and mobile products beginning in 2005, said Kurt Scherf, vice president, principal analyst, Parks Associates. Alereon has shown an ability to move quickly to meet the demands of an increasingly wireless centric marketplace.
