Alereon's AL4000 PHY Chipset Achieves Compliance with the WiMedia Registration Program

Chipset Has Been Shipping since September as Part of the USB-IF Peripheral Developers Kit

AUSTIN, Texas--November 29, 2006
--Alereon, Inc., the ultrawideband (UWB) technology leader for mobile WiMedia and Certified Wireless USB solutions, has successfully completed the WiMedia Alliance Registration Program for its AL4000 Family WiMedia PHY chipset, which is based on the WiMedia common radio platform standard.

WiMedia's Certification Program is comprised of two parts, the first of which, a compliance and interoperability program, tests and "registers" Physical Layer implementations (PHYs), based on the WiMedia Alliance's PHY specification. Once a PHY is registered, that PHY then becomes eligible for use in a platform that can be submitted for certification against the program's second part, the WiMedia Platform Certification. Registration by the official certification program offers a significant step toward delivering high-speed (480 Mbps and more), low-power wireless electronic products based on Certified Wireless USB, from the USB-IF.

"Registration of Alereon's PHY chipset resulted from stringent interoperability tests," said Eric Broockman, CEO of Alereon. "Chip manufacturers are required to pass these tests in order to access the intellectual property needed to implement a WiMedia-compliant solution. Registration is also required to meet the wireless USB standard. Finally, achieving compliance ensures Alereon's chipset can interoperate harmoniously with those of other chip manufacturers."

The Alereon AL4000 Family WiMedia PHY chipset provides a complete solution for use with any compatible WiMedia or Wireless USB Media Access Controller (MAC). In production since June 2006, Alereon has shipped more than 350 PHY boards to more than 50 customers. A comprehensive validation report is available to partners. The report contains a detailed analysis demonstrating the superior performance and dependability of the AL4000 PHY chipset. The AL4000 PHY is in stock and available for shipments today.

WiMedia is the standard radio platform for UWB technologies. With its high-speed, low-power capabilities, WiMedia UWB has been selected by the USB-IF as well as the Bluetooth SIG as the foundation for tomorrow's wireless consumer electronics, mobile and computer applications.
